Crash Course In English
Here is an article I read in the Daily Mirror after first hearing about the incident on the Berwick Speedway Website :
A czech speedway rider who could barely speak English became suddenly fluent after a head injury.
Matej Kus could hardly string a sentence together until he was knocked out racing in Glasgow.
It is thought to be a case of foreign accent syndrome, which can affect concussion patients.
Oxford University doctor in phonetics Dr John Coleman said: “He might just have been inhibited in his use of English before.”
But Matej’s agent Pavel Kubes said last night: “It seems you have to bang him on the head to speak English - because he is not speaking it any more!”
This is an amazing little story and i felt i would share it with you all. This incident happens after Berwick had 6 injurys in 1 week.

I believe there’s really something to this story. I knew a speedway rider in the early 1970s (who shall remain unnamed). This rider was talented on the track, but of decidedly mundane intellect. After suffering a terrible skull fracture in a non-speedway-related accident and nearly dying, he recovered fully and seemed to have gained at least 20 I.Q. points.
